VICKIE BYRON
TEXT IN THE CITY
In this recent series, lively patterns and colors capture the energy of a commute between the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. The text is made up or found, large and obscure, tucked into cracks, advertised, political as in “Watch the Gap” or “TURN LEFTist.” Loud text complements architectural geometry and bulbous graffiti, pairs with organic growth. Elevated trains offer a high vantage point. Thinking about the speed of the tracks and the breaks in our vision, flashing windows open and and obscure our views, while diagonal lines increase the speed.
